The Context of John 2:19
Just after Jesus cleared the temple courts, the authorities demand a sign to justify what He has done (verse 18). This is His reply. John explains two verses later that 'he spake of the temple of his body' (verse 21), something the disciples understood only after He rose.
What Does John 2:19 Mean?
The words sound impossible, even reckless. The great temple in Jerusalem had been under construction for decades, and Jesus speaks of raising it in three days. His hearers take Him literally and are baffled (verse 20). But John tells us Jesus was speaking of His own body. He is the true meeting place between God and people, the place where heaven and earth come together, and He is saying that even if that place is destroyed, He will raise it up. The challengers asked for a sign, and He gave them the deepest one of all, folded into a riddle they could not yet read.
Here, near the very start of His ministry, Jesus already has the cross and the empty tomb in view. He knows He will be destroyed, and He knows He will rise. The temple was where people came to be made right with God; now that meeting happens in Jesus Himself, in a body broken and raised for us. Everything the temple promised is fulfilled in Him. The God we long to draw near to has come near in person, and not even death can tear that down.
