What Does John 2:25 Mean?
John closes the chapter with Jesus' penetrating knowledge of the human heart. Throughout this Gospel he reads people: Nathanael under the fig tree (John 1:48), the history of the woman at the well (John 4:18), the thoughts of murmuring disciples (John 6:64). And the next sentence begins, there was a man — Nicodemus, whom Jesus likewise knows through and through.
To be fully known is fearful and comforting at once. Nothing in us surprises him — not the shallow places in our faith, not the motives we hide even from ourselves — and still he came, still he stayed, still he gave himself. The One who knows what is in man is the very One who laid down his life for man. Before him, pretense is pointless and honesty is finally safe.
