Peter and the beloved disciple return home after witnessing the empty tomb.

Context

The disciples have seen the tomb and the grave clothes and have believed or are puzzled.

What Does John 20:10 Mean?

They went away again unto their own home. The words are spare and moving. The disciples have come to the sepulchre, have seen the empty tomb, have been stunned by what they have found. Now they return home. There is no drama here, no sudden clarity. Peter and John leave the garden and walk back through Jerusalem, carrying what they have seen but not yet certain what it means, or what comes next.

This quiet return home is part of the pattern of resurrection faith. It does not arrive all at once in a burst of understanding. The disciples must return to their lives, must wait, must be patient for the fuller revelation. In a few verses, the risen Jesus himself will come to them. But now they go home. In this small detail, John shows us that the resurrection unfolds in time, that faith builds gradually, and that there are moments—like this one—when we must simply wait, holding what we have seen, until Christ himself clarifies all things.

Application

When we encounter evidence of God's work in our lives, we often return to ordinary life carrying what we have seen, waiting for fuller understanding. Patience and faithfulness in this waiting are themselves forms of faith.
