Context
As Mary looks into the sepulchre, supernatural beings appear to her.
What Does John 20:12 Mean?
In her weeping, Mary looks into the sepulchre and sees two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. The angelic guardians frame the empty space where death held Jesus. They sit where his head and feet would have been. There is order here, reverence, a marking of the sacred. The angels are not agitated; they are sitting. There is a calm in their presence, a stillness at the very heart of the most remarkable moment in history.
Mary sees them, and yet her first response is not one of awe or understanding, but a deepening of her grief. She does not recognize them as heralds of resurrection; she is still possessed by the fear that someone has taken her Lord. The angels will ask her why she weeps, but the very presence of supernatural beings is not enough to turn her grief to joy. She is locked in her own sorrow, and even the extraordinary must enter her consciousness through that door.
Application
Sometimes we are surrounded by signs of God's presence and power, yet our grief or preoccupation keeps us from recognizing them. God's signs meet us where we are.
