The Context of John 3:18
Still within Jesus' night conversation with Nicodemus, just after John 3:16 and 17. Jesus has said He came to save the world, and now He explains how that plays out for each person.
What Does John 3:18 Mean?
Jesus has just said God sent the Son to save the world (verse 17). Here He shows what that means for each of us. The one who believes on Him is not condemned, full stop. No verdict hangs over that person any longer. The charge is gone. For the one who will not believe, Jesus is sober and honest: that person stands condemned already, here and now, by remaining apart from the only rescue God has given.
Notice that the whole weight rests on a name, the name of the only begotten Son of God. Everything turns on whether we come to Him.
