Jesus has just told Nicodemus that a person must be born again to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). Nicodemus, taking the words at their flattest, asks how someone already old could possibly be born a second time.
What Does John 3:4 Mean?
Nicodemus hears born again and thinks only of flesh and blood. How can a grown man return to his mother's womb? His question sounds almost childlike from so learned a teacher, and there is something tender in it. He is old. The years are behind him, his habits settled, his reputation fixed. The idea of beginning again feels impossible, far past merely strange, a door long since closed. He cannot imagine how a finished life could be made new.
That impossibility is exactly the point Jesus is pressing toward. The new birth comes from above, the work of the Spirit (John 3:5-6), a gift that no climb back into the womb and no effort or wisdom could ever produce.
