At the well in Samaria, midday. The woman has just raised the old dispute over the right place to worship, whether on Mount Gerizim or in Jerusalem (verse 20). Jesus lifts her past the argument to what worship truly is.

She had asked a geography question, which mountain holds the true worship. Jesus answers with something larger. The hour has come, He says, and is already here, when worshippers will draw near to the Father in spirit and in truth. The God of heaven is the one doing the searching, looking for hearts that will simply come to Him as they are.
