What Does John 4:40 Mean?
They didn't want him to leave. The Samaritans, a people often treated as unclean by the Jewish establishment, were so moved by his presence and teaching that they begged him to remain. And the remarkable thing is that Jesus said yes. He changed his plans. He was heading toward Galilee, but he stayed. Two days is a significant investment of his presence.
This detail shows us Jesus heart toward those who hunger. They were not his native people. Their theology was fractured. But they asked, and he remained. He taught them, answered their questions, opened their understanding. What Samaria needed most was not a quick miracle and a departure, but the presence of Jesus, prolonged long enough to become formative.
Application
Jesus remains with those who ask him to stay. He does not rush. He invests time in the hungry. If we find ourselves unmoved by the presence of Jesus, it may be because we have not asked him to linger.
