The Jewish authorities ask who told him to carry his bed.

Context

They want to identify the law-breaker so they can confront him.

What Does John 5:12 Mean?

Then asked they him, What man is that? They have found a lead. The healer is their real target; the healed man is merely a witness (and a problematic one). They want a name, a face, someone to hold accountable for the breach of Sabbath law. Their question is practical, prosecutorial.

But it is also blind. They ask 'What man?' as if the answer is a category problem—as if they are trying to sort him into 'rabbi' or 'physician' or 'lawbreaker.' They do not yet suspect they are asking about the Messiah.

Application

When we demand that God conform to our categories, we often fail to recognize him when he arrives.
