Context
This is the turning point where Jesus becomes a target not just for debate, but for harm.
What Does John 5:16 Mean?
And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. The word persecute is diōkō in Greek—to hunt, to pursue. Not yet to arrest, but to harry, to make known their hostility. They want to slay him. The reason: he heals on the day of rest. From their perspective, he is a dangerous innovator, a violator of Torah, a threat to the covenant order.
But John is asking us to see otherwise. A man is whole. Life has returned. And for this, the authorities seek death. The collision is irreconcilable: the kingdom of healing and the kingdom of law cannot both rule. Jesus will choose healing every time, and the authorities will choose law. One or the other must fall.
Application
Doing God's work in a world ruled by other laws will attract opposition. We proceed anyway.
