What Does John 5:32 Mean?

Before naming John the Baptist, Jesus points beyond him: there is another that beareth witness of me. The verses ahead identify this witness as the Father himself (vv. 36-37), whose testimony stands whether or not any human court receives it.

While men in Jerusalem weighed his claims, Jesus rested in a witness no tribunal could overturn; at his baptism the voice had already spoken, this is my beloved Son (Matthew 3:17). There is freedom here worth imitating: to live from what God declares rather than from the shifting verdicts of the crowd, as Jesus did under deadly pressure.
