Jesus does not depend on human testimony for salvation, but speaks of it so that his listeners might be saved.

Context

Jesus is clarifying that while he values John's witness, his confidence is not in human opinion but in the Father.

What Does John 5:34 Mean?

Jesus makes a crucial distinction: he receives not testimony from men, yet he receives the testimony of John the Baptist. This is not contradiction but clarification. Jesus does not need men's words to validate him - his reality is independent of human approval. Yet he chooses to speak of John's testimony anyway, not for his own sake but for the sake of his listeners. He is saying: 'I do this for you. I present evidence because you need it, not because I need you to believe me.'

This is the generosity of Christ. He comes down to our level, speaks in our language, presents evidence to our minds - all because he loves us and wants us to be saved. He does not stand aloof and demand belief. He wades into the stream of human doubt to retrieve us.

Application

Christ's commitment to our salvation is not contingent on our approval. He reaches toward us precisely because he knows we are lost.
