Context
Jesus pivots from human witnesses to the most compelling witness of all: his miracles and the works of salvation.
What Does John 5:36 Mean?
Jesus has a greater witness than John, because his works testify for him. The healings, the exorcisms, the raising of the dead - these are not rhetoric but reality. A person could claim divine authority with merely words, but these acts reveal the kingdom of God breaking into the present. The leper who is cleansed, the paralyzed man who walks, the demonized who are freed - each becomes a living sermon, a walking testimony. The works Jesus does are the kinds of works only God could do. In doing them, he shows that the Father has indeed sent him.
When our actions are aligned with God's heart, they too become witness. The life transformed by grace, the forgiveness offered at cost, the love shown to the unlovable - these speak louder than any argument.
In the Original Language
erga (ἔργα), 'works' -- mighty deeds that reveal divine power and character, not mere human activity
Application
Our faith grows not when we hear more arguments but when we see love at work - in Scripture, in history, in the people around us transformed by grace.
