What Does John 6:22 Mean?
John reconstructs the crowd's reasoning. The day after the feeding, the people remember that only one boat had been there; they watched the disciples leave in it without Jesus, yet now he is nowhere on their side of the sea.
The crowd is left with a riddle: the Master is missing without explanation. Their puzzlement is honest, and it sets them moving — they will cross the lake to find him. Even a confused search for Jesus can be the beginning of something good, if it ends at his feet and listens to what he says when he is found.
