Context
The listeners misunderstand Jesus literally, as they misunderstood the feeding. They want a perpetual supply of bread.
What Does John 6:34 Mean?
The crowd's request is both touching and tragic. 'Evermore give us this bread,' they say, and the words contain a deep human truth: we want to be fed, to have our needs met constantly, never to hunger again. But they still think Jesus is speaking of grain. They have seen the miracle and tasted the bread, yet they do not recognize what stands before them. Their hunger is real; their misunderstanding is complete.
Here lies the gap between what we see and what we understand. The listeners witnessed bread multiply in Jesus' hands, yet they cannot leap to the truth that he himself is the bread. Many of us know the story of Jesus, have heard his promises, yet we still petition him for lesser things, not recognizing that to have him is to have everything.
Application
We often ask God to supply what we think we lack, without realizing that his gift of himself is the answer to every real need. What are we asking God for today that he may already be offering?
