The manna the ancestors ate in the wilderness, though divinely provided, did not prevent their death.

Context

Jesus contrasts the manna of Exodus with himself, showing that temporal provision is not ultimate life.

What Does John 6:49 Mean?

The manna is the great miracle of Exodus. For forty years, God rained bread from heaven on the wandering people. They ate and were satisfied. Yet they died. Psalm 78:24-25 says God 'gave them of the corn of heaven: man did eat angels' food,' yet verse 31 adds that God 'slew the fattest of them.' The point is not that God failed or that the manna was a lie. The point is that the manna fed the body but could not deliver from death. It sustained life for a season, but not eternally.

This is the difference between types and their fulfillment. The manna was real, it was God's gift, it was effective for its purpose. But it was temporary. Jesus is not criticizing the manna or Moses; he is showing that he himself is the fulfillment of what the manna pointed toward. Where the manna fed for a day and required gathering every morning, he feeds eternally. Where the manna sustained the body, he sustains the soul and raises the body on the last day.

Application

What in your life are you depending on for satisfaction that, like the manna, can only feed for a season? Where are you settling for temporary provision when permanent life is offered?
