John 6:61 Meaning and Explanation

Jesus hears what they have only half-spoken. They are murmuring, complaining to one another in low voices. But he knows. He reads what is happening in them without their saying a word. And rather than defend himself or soften his claim, he asks a direct question: 'Does this offend you?' It is not hostile. It is clear-eyed. He is asking them to face what is happening in themselves. They are offended. They are scandalized. The word 'skandalizō' means to be entrapped, to stumble, to be made to fall. He is acknowledging that his teaching is acting as a stone in the road for them. The question is: will they stop and examine why? Or will they move on?

We often prefer that uncomfortable moments be smoothed over. We prefer not to look directly at what is happening in us when we hear something we resist. But Jesus does not let us off easy. He names the offense and invites honesty. That is the opposite of manipulation. It is the greatest respect, because it treats us as responsible beings capable of choosing.
