Context
Barley bread was the food of the poor and servants, while wheat bread was for the wealthy. The boy's meal, small and coarse, was meant for one person. Yet Andrew brings it to Jesus' attention, leaving the impossibility with him.
What Does John 6:9 Mean?
A child holds something small. Perhaps he carried it from home, a gift wrapped in cloth, the fullness of a simple meal: five loaves and two fishes. Andrew sees what everyone else has overlooked, not because his eyes are sharper but because his heart is turned toward what can be offered rather than what is lacking.
The boy's meal is genuinely insignificant next to thousands of hungry people. Andrew does not pretend otherwise. 'What are they among so many?' is not weakness but clarity. And in that clarity, Andrew places the small offering in Jesus' hands, where small becomes the seed of abundance.
In the Original Language
paidion (Greek), 'child' or 'lad' -- the young person whose lack of status paradoxically makes him available for grace.
Application
Bring what you have, however small, and place it in Jesus' hands. Do not diminish it, but do not hold it back waiting for it to be sufficient. Offer it and watch what he does.
