Context
The crowds at the Feast of Tabernacles are divided about Jesus' identity. His brothers had urged him to go publicly to the feast; he comes later, quietly teaching in the temple. These words respond to murmuring about who he is and where his authority comes from.
What Does John 7:16 Mean?
Jesus stands in the temple and speaks with quiet authority. The teaching that astounds everyone, the signs that draw such debate, the claims that trouble the authorities, all of it does not originate with him as an independent actor. He is the perfect conduit of another's will and word. We find in these verses a radical transparency, a complete alignment with the one who sent him. To know Jesus' doctrine is to know the Father's will.
Here is the model for all true spirituality: not innovation or private revelation, but faithfulness to what has been given us. In Christ, we see obedience made visible, the human will perfectly aligned with God's. When we receive his teaching, we receive the testimony of the Father himself.
Application
When we struggle to trust Jesus or his words, we might ask: am I judging by what seems impressive or novel, or by what bears the mark of the Father's truth? His doctrine proves itself not by novelty but by alignment with God's eternal purposes.
