Their murderous intent proves they are not Abraham's children, for Abraham would never kill a messenger from God.

Context

Jesus contrasts Abraham's character of obedience with the violent opposition of those who claim to be his descendants.

What Does John 8:40 Mean?

Jesus now names the ultimate indictment: they seek to kill him. And what is his crime? He has told them the truth. He has done nothing but speak what he heard from God, what he witnessed in the Father's presence. Abraham, who was willing to offer his own beloved son in obedience to God, would never lift a hand against one who speaks God's word. The contrast is absolute. Abraham is the man of faith, of obedience, of reverence. These men are murderers. One obeys God. The others seek to destroy God's messenger.

There is a profound irony here that would have cut his listeners to the heart. They pride themselves on being Abraham's seed, yet in seeking to kill the Son of God, they are doing exactly what Abraham never would do. They have become not his children but his opposites.

Application

What would Abraham do? That is the question Jesus plants in every heart. When we face a word from God that unsettles us, do we receive it or resist it? Our response reveals whose child we truly are.
