Jesus denies their accusation and explains his true motivation: honoring the Father, not seeking his own glory.

Context

Jesus responds calmly to the accusation, asserting his integrity and refocusing on his true concern: honoring the Father.

What Does John 8:49 Mean?

Notice the composure. Jesus does not rage. He does not defend himself desperately. He speaks as one who knows exactly who he is. 'I have not a devil.' The denial is simple and sufficient. But then he redirects: his concern is not his own reputation but his Father's honor. Everything he does, he does in service to the Father. Every word he speaks flows from reverence for the One who sent him. And precisely because he honors the Father, he will not let false accusations stand.

Then the reversal: 'ye do dishonour me.' This is not petty. To dishonor the Son is to dishonor the Father who sent him. To reject the one the Father has authorized is to insult the Father's wisdom and judgment. They think they are protecting the law and the God of Abraham. In fact, they are dishonoring both.

In the Original Language

timao (timao), 'honor, value, show respect' -- to regard highly, to prize, to treat with reverence

Application

What occupies the center of our concern? Our reputation or God's honor? To the extent we focus on defending ourselves, we lose the peace Jesus models here.
