The neighbors ask where Jesus is, but the man cannot tell them; Jesus has departed.

Context

The neighbors' next question is practical: where is this healer? They might wish to speak with him, see him, or understand more. The man's answer is simple: he does not know.

What Does John 9:12 Mean?

There is a poignancy in this exchange. The neighbors want to locate Jesus, perhaps to verify the account, perhaps to witness him themselves. But the man does not know where he is. Jesus has come and gone. He healed and then departed, leaving the man with his sight and his testimony, but no instructions for the neighbors.

This reflects the nature of Jesus' ministry throughout John's gospel. He comes, acts, teaches, then withdraws. Those who miss him in the moment cannot simply summon him back. The relationship with Jesus is not on human schedule or terms. The man, however, does not need to know where Jesus is. He carries the evidence of Jesus' presence in his own open eyes.

Application

We cannot always produce the one who has healed us or changed us. We can only testify to what has happened. The absence of the healer need not undermine the reality of healing. Our changed lives are themselves a sufficient witness.
