What Does John 9:17 Mean?
Unable to agree among themselves, the council turns back to the one man with firsthand knowledge and asks his verdict on the one who opened his eyes. They likely want material for their case; what they get instead is a confession.
"He is a prophet" — a man through whom God speaks and acts, in the line of Elijah and Elisha, who also carried God's healing power. The man's understanding is enlarging as he reflects on what happened to him; sight is becoming insight. He speaks as far as his light reaches and no further, and to such a heart more light will be given (John 7:17). Honest reflection on what God has already done is one of faith's surest schools.
