What Does John 9:19 Mean?

The interrogation has three prongs — identity, history, explanation. The first two the parents can safely answer; the third they will not touch. Even the phrasing carries suspicion: "your son, who ye say was born blind," as though the family had invented his condition.

The leaders hope the story will break at its weakest link, but their final question — "how then doth he now see?" — is exactly the right one, asked with the wrong motive. Hostile questions can be better than their askers know, for this one has only one true answer, and the whole chapter keeps pressing everyone toward it. The same question still stands before every reader of John 9: the man sees — how?
