What Does John 9:26 Mean?
Having failed to make the man adopt their verdict, the examiners return to the facts, hoping a retold story will spring a contradiction. It is the same question asked in verses 10 and 15; the inquiry is now moving in circles.
Asking again is not the same as listening. There is a question that seeks the truth and a question that seeks an exit from it, and they can use identical words. God welcomes the honest kind from anyone — "How can these things be?" drew a patient answer from Jesus (John 3:9) — but the question asked to escape an answer already given only hardens the asker. The man, to his credit, is about to name the difference aloud.
