Context
The man has been healed and cast out, and Jesus has found him. Now Jesus asks about his belief, and the man responds with honest inquiry.
What Does John 9:36 Mean?
The man's response is disarming in its directness. He does not pretend to know who the Son of God is. He does not construct theology or lean on doctrine. He simply says: 'Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?' Notice that he calls Jesus 'Lord' even as he asks for clarification. There is deference and respect already present, even as he seeks understanding. He is ready to believe; he only needs to know the object of his belief. His question contains its own readiness. He is not skeptical or defensive. He is open, childlike, hungry for truth.
This is how faith often grows in us. We encounter the presence and power of God in our lives, and then we ask for understanding. We bring our confusion, our hunger, our willingness to the person who can answer. The healed man stands before the one who healed him and simply asks to know him truly. In that posture of honest seeking, he makes space for revelation. He will not have to wait long.
Application
Honest questioning in the presence of Jesus is itself a form of faith. We do not have to pretend to know or understand everything. We can bring our genuine confusion and openness to Christ and trust that he will reveal himself. The healing of our lives creates the hunger that his revelation satisfies.
