What Does Joshua 3:5 Mean?
On the eve of the crossing, Joshua tells the people to sanctify themselves, to set themselves apart and prepare in heart and body for what God is about to do. Tomorrow, he promises, the Lord will do wonders in their midst.
Wonder and readiness belong together. God invites His people to prepare for what only He can accomplish. We cannot manufacture the miracle, but we can make ourselves ready to receive it, clearing away whatever would dull our eyes to His work. To sanctify oneself is to come before God expectant and clean-handed, trusting that He still does wonders among those who wait on Him.
