What Does Joshua 4:16 Mean?
God instructs Joshua to order the priests, who still stand in the riverbed holding the ark of the testimony, to come up onto the bank. Their task of holding the waters is nearly finished.
The ark is here called the ark of the testimony, for it held the tablets that testified to God's covenant with His people. The priests have stood faithfully until released by God's own command. Even the bearers of His presence move only when He says, and they are not left in the riverbed a moment longer than His purpose requires. God remembers those who stand for Him.
