What Does Joshua 8:13 Mean?
Every unit is now positioned: the host to the north, the ambush to the west. As the trap stands ready, Joshua moves down into the valley, placing himself at the center of the coming action rather than safely behind it.
Again we see the leader in the midst of danger, not on its edges. The commander who devised the plan also stakes his own person on it. Such leadership wins trust because it asks nothing of others that it will not bear itself. It points us toward the Captain of our salvation, who did not send His people into the valley alone but went down into the depths of it Himself, even into death, to win the field for us.
