What Does Judges 13:17 Mean?
Manoah asks for the visitor's name, intending to honor him once the promise proves true. It is a sincere request, born of gratitude and faith that the words will indeed 'come to pass.' He wants to render due thanks to the one through whom such good news has come.
Yet his desire to honor the messenger will soon be redirected, for the One worthy of all honor is the Lord Himself. Manoah's instinct to give thanks is right, but it reaches toward the wrong recipient. Often our gratitude lands first on the instrument God used, when it is meant finally to rise to God -- the Giver behind every good gift, whose name is above every name.
