Now helpless, Samson is taken by the Philistines, who gouge out his eyes, lead him down to Gaza, bind him with bronze fetters, and set him grinding grain in the prison house, the labor of a beast or a slave.
The fall is now complete and bitter. The eyes that led him toward forbidden sights are put out; the man who carried off Gaza's gate now grinds in Gaza's prison. Sin, having promised freedom, delivers chains. Yet even here the story is not only judgment, for the prison floor can become the place where a proud heart is finally humbled. What looks like the end of Samson is, in the mercy of God, the beginning of his return.
