What Does Judges 18:5 Mean?
The scouts ask the Levite to seek a word from God about the success of their journey. On the surface this looks like devotion, a desire to know the divine will before taking a great step.
Yet they ask at a shrine God never sanctioned, through a priest never appointed, about a venture they have already resolved to pursue. The request reveals a religion that wants heaven's blessing without heaven's direction.
