What Does Judges 6:34 Mean?
Against that gathering threat comes a decisive 'but.' The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Gideon, and he blows the trumpet to summon Israel to war. His own clan, the Abiezrites who days earlier sought his death, now rally behind him.
The Hebrew pictures the Spirit clothing Himself with Gideon, taking hold of the man as a garment to do God's work through him. The fearful thresher of the winepress is now empowered from above. Human courage was never enough for this hour, and the verse makes clear it does not have to be. When God's Spirit takes hold of a willing servant, the timid become bold and the weak are made able for whatever the Lord requires.
