What Does Judges 6:4 Mean?
The picture widens to show how total the devastation was. The invaders encamp across the country and ruin the increase of the earth all the way to Gaza in the far southwest. Nothing is spared: not the standing crops, not the flocks, not even the working animals.
To leave no sustenance is to leave no future. A land emptied of seed and herd has been emptied of tomorrow. Such complete loss is meant to bring a person to the end of self-reliance. When every visible resource is gone, the heart is finally free to look up. Israel's barren fields are the dark backdrop against which God will display that deliverance comes from Him alone.
