1 Kings 19 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Even brave heroes get tired and scared sometimes. Today Elijah is worn all the way out - and we see how gently God takes care of him.

Today's Story

Elijah had just seen God do something amazing. But right afterward, he got scared and ran far away into the desert. He was so tired and so sad that he sat down under a bush and said, “I can't do this anymore.” And he fell asleep.

Now, what do you think God did with His worn-out, discouraged prophet? Did He scold him? No. God was gentle. An angel woke Elijah softly and gave him warm bread and cool water. “Get up and eat,” the angel said. “You need your strength.” God let Elijah rest and eat, twice, until he felt better.

Then God told Elijah to stand on a mountain. A mighty wind roared by - but God wasn't in the wind. An earthquake shook the ground - but God wasn't in the earthquake. A fire crackled - but God wasn't in the fire.

And then… came a gentle whisper. Soft and quiet. And there was God. God came to His tired friend not with a roar, but with a gentle, quiet voice - close and kind.
