1 Samuel 19 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

King Saul has grown jealous of David, and David is in danger. But God places friends all around David to keep him safe.

Today's Story

David had done nothing wrong. He played music for the king, he won battles for Israel, and everyone loved him. But that was the problem - King Saul grew jealous, and his jealousy turned into anger.

Saul wanted to harm David. But God had given David good friends.

First there was Jonathan, the king's own son. He went straight to his father and spoke up. “Please don't hurt David,” he said. “He has only ever helped you.” For a while, Saul listened.

But the danger came back. One night, Saul sent men to watch David's house. David's wife, Michal, found out. “Hurry - you have to get away tonight!” she whispered. She helped David climb out a window into the dark, and he slipped away to safety.

David ran to Samuel, the old prophet, and told him everything. And there, with God's prophet, David was safe. God had watched over him all night long - using brave friends to keep him from harm.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Saul was jealous because David did so well. What does jealousy feel like, and what can we do when it sneaks into our hearts?
  2. Jonathan and Michal both took a risk to help David. Who are the people God has given you to keep you safe?
  3. David ran to a safe place when he was scared. Where do you go, and who do you talk to, when you feel afraid?
