1 Samuel 4 for Kids

God's people make a big mistake - they treat God like a lucky charm instead of trusting God Himself.

Today's Story

God's people were in a battle against the Philistines, and they were losing. So they had an idea: “Let's bring the ark of God from His house into the battle! Then we'll surely win!” The ark was the special golden chest that showed God was with His people.

But here's the problem: the people were treating the ark like a magic lucky charm. They thought, “If we just carry this special box, we'll automatically win!” But they weren't actually trusting GOD, or obeying Him, or loving Him with their hearts. They just wanted the box.

And so, sadly, things went wrong. The people lost the battle anyway, and the ark was carried off. It was a hard, sad day for Israel. The old priest Eli was so shocked when he heard the news that he fell and died.

The people learned a hard lesson: God is not a lucky charm or a magic object. We can't just carry around a special thing and expect God to do whatever we want. What God wants is our hearts - to truly know Him, trust Him, and obey Him.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. The people treated the ark like a lucky charm. Why can't we treat God like a magic object that does whatever we want?
  2. God wants our hearts, not just our stuff. What does it mean to truly trust and love God?
  3. Sometimes people want God's gifts more than God Himself. How can we make sure we love God, and not just what He gives?
