2 Kings 6 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

God's helper Elisha shows us two amazing things: God cares about little problems, and He sends help we can't even see.

Today's Story

One day Elisha's helpers were cutting down trees by the river. As one man swung his axe, the heavy iron head flew off the handle and - splash! - sank into the water. “Oh no!” he cried. “It wasn't even mine. I borrowed it!”

Elisha asked, “Where did it fall?” The man showed him the spot. Then Elisha threw a stick into the water - and the iron axe head floated right up to the top, like a leaf! The man reached out and grabbed it. God cared about one borrowed axe.

Another time, an enemy army came in the night and circled the whole town with horses and chariots. In the morning, Elisha's helper looked out and gasped. “Oh, master! What are we going to do?”

But Elisha was calm. “Don't be afraid,” he said. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then he prayed, “Lord, open his eyes so he can see.”

And suddenly the young man could see it - the hills all around them were full of horses and chariots of fire! God's shining army was everywhere, keeping them safe. They were never alone.

Talk About It

  1. What is something that makes you feel scared or alone sometimes? How does it help to remember God's help is all around you?
  2. The young man couldn't see God's army until God opened his eyes. What good things might God be doing that we can't see?
  3. God cared about one borrowed axe head. What does that tell us about the little things you worry about?
