2 Samuel 2 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

After waiting and waiting, David finally becomes a king — and the very first thing he does is say thank you.

Today's Story

David didn't just grab the crown for himself. First he asked God, “Where do You want me to go?” God answered, “Go to the town of Hebron.” So David went.

And there, the people poured special oil on David's head and made him king over their part of the land. After all those years of running and hiding and waiting, God's promise was finally coming true, step by step.

Now, what would the new king say first? David remembered something. A faraway town called Jabesh-Gilead had bravely honored King Saul after he died. So David sent them a kind message: “May the LORD be kind and faithful to you, because you did this good thing. I will be good to you too.”

It wasn't all easy — not everyone wanted David as king, and there were hard days ahead. But David had started the right way: asking God first, and thanking people for their kindness.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Before David did anything, he asked God where to go. When is a good time for you to ask God before you decide something?
  2. David waited a long, long time to become king. What is something good you've had to wait for?
  3. The new king's first message was a thank-you. Who is someone you could thank today for being kind?
