Near the end of his life, David remembers his bravest friends — and one of the most touching things they ever did for him.
Today's Story
David was an old man now, near the end of his life. He spoke some of his last words, remembering that a good leader who follows God is like the bright morning sun rising on a cloudless day — warm and full of light.
Then the Bible tells about David's “mighty men” — his bravest, most loyal friends. And it shares one beautiful story.
One hot day, David was tired and thirsty, and enemies were camped near his hometown of Bethlehem. David sighed, “Oh, how I'd love a drink of water from the well by the gate back home.”
He was just wishing out loud. But three of his mighty men heard him — and they loved David so much that they snuck right through the enemy camp, drew water from that well, and carried it all the way back to him!
David was amazed. The water was so precious — his friends had risked everything for it — that he wouldn't even drink it. Instead, he poured it out as a gift to God. “This is too precious to keep for myself,” he said. He gave his very best back to God.
