After a lifetime of God's rescues, old King David sits down and writes a thank-you song. It's all about one strong, safe word: Rock.
Today's Story
David had lived a long, full life. He had been a shepherd, a giant-slayer, a runaway, and a king. Through all of it — lions and bears, giants and storms, scary caves and long waits — God had rescued him again and again.
So David picked up his harp and wrote God a song. And the very first thing he sang was this: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress.”
Think about a rock — big, solid, strong. You can stand on it and it never wobbles. You can hide behind it and feel safe. That's what God had been for David his whole life. Solid. Strong. Safe.
David sang on: “When I called to the LORD, He heard me. He reached down from on high and rescued me. He brought me out into a wide, open space because He delighted in me.”
It was a song of pure thank-you. David wasn't bragging about how brave he had been. He was bragging about how good God had been. God was his Rock — and God is your Rock too.
