Amos 5 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

This chapter has one of the most famous lines in the whole book. God says He wants fairness to roll on like a river, and kindness like a stream that never dries up.

Today's Story

Amos the shepherd had something important to say, straight from God's heart.

God's people were singing songs and having big worship days. From the outside it looked wonderful. But God could see something they were missing. Some of them sang beautiful songs on one day — and were unfair to poor people the very next day.

God said something surprising. He said He did not want their pretend worship. Pretty songs were not enough if they were being mean to people the rest of the week.

So God gave them a kinder, better way. “Look for good, not bad,” He said. “Come close to Me, and really live!”

Then God painted a beautiful picture. He said, “Let fairness roll on like a river. Let kindness flow like a stream that never dries up.”

Think about a river. It keeps flowing and flowing, all day, all night. It never quits. That is how God wants our fairness and kindness to be — not just on one special day, but flowing all the time, to everyone we meet.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. When has someone been unfair to you? And when have you helped make something fair for someone else?
  2. God said a river never stops flowing. What would it look like for your kindness to keep flowing every day, not just sometimes?
  3. God did not want pretend worship — pretty songs but mean hearts. Why do you think God cares more about how we treat people than about a fancy show?
