Deuteronomy 1 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Deuteronomy is one big goodbye talk. Moses is old now, and he gathers God's people to remind them of all the ways God has loved them.

Today's Story

Moses stood in front of all of God's people. He had led them for a very long time. Now he wanted to help them remember.

“Do you remember,” Moses said, “when God brought us to the edge of the good land? God said, ‘Look! I am giving you this land. Go on in. Don't be afraid.’”

But the people were scared. They sent twelve men to peek at the land first. Ten of them came back shaking. “The cities are too big! The people are too strong! We can't do it!” they cried.

Moses had reminded them, “God will go in front of you. He will fight for you. He carried you all this way, like a dad carries his little child.”

But the people were too afraid to trust God. So they had to wait a long, long time before going into the land.

Now, telling the story again, Moses wanted the people to learn: God is big enough. God is strong enough. When God says “Don't be afraid,” we can believe Him.

  1. When is a time you felt scared? What helped you feel brave again?
  2. God told the people, “Don't be afraid, I will go with you.” How does it help to know God goes with you, even to scary places?
  3. Moses said God carried His people like a dad carries his child. Who carries you and keeps you safe?
