Exodus 17 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Two things happen in the desert today: God brings water out of a rock, and two friends help hold up a very tired Moses.

Today's Story

The people were thirsty again, and there was no water anywhere. They grumbled at Moses until he cried out, “God, what do I do?”

God said, “Take your staff. Go to that big rock and strike it.” Moses hit the rock with his staff — and water came gushing out! Fresh, cold water, pouring right out of a rock, enough for everyone. Who else but God could do that?

A little while later, an enemy army came to fight God's people. Moses had an idea. He climbed a hill where everyone could see him and held up his hands with God's staff lifted high. As long as Moses's hands were up, God's people were winning!

But Moses's arms got so tired. When they drooped down, his people started losing. He couldn't hold them up by himself.

So his brother Aaron and his friend Hur had an idea. They rolled a stone over for Moses to sit on. Then Aaron stood on one side and Hur on the other, and they held up Moses's tired arms — one each — all the way until the sun went down. And God's people won the day.

Moses couldn't do it alone. But he didn't have to. He had friends to hold him up.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Moses couldn't keep his arms up alone — he needed Aaron and Hur. Who helps hold YOU up when something is hard?
  2. Aaron and Hur could have just watched Moses struggle, but they stepped in to help. Who is someone you could help hold up this week?
  3. God brought water right out of a rock. What's something you need that only God can give?
