Exodus 5 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Moses finally stands in front of the most powerful king in the world and gives God's message. But the king says NO — and things get harder before they get better.

Today's Story

Moses and Aaron walked right into Pharaoh's grand palace and said the words God had given them: “The Lord, the God of Israel, says: Let My people go!”

Pharaoh crossed his arms. “Who is this Lord? I don't know Him. And I will not let them go.”

And just to be mean about it, Pharaoh made the work even harder. Before, the slaves were given straw to mix into their bricks. Now Pharaoh said, “Make the same number of bricks — but go find your own straw!”

The people were worn out. They couldn't keep up. And then they got in trouble for falling behind. They came to Moses, upset. “We thought you came to HELP us! Now everything is worse!”

Moses didn't know what to do. So he did the very best thing he could do — he went straight to God. “Lord, why? Why has this gotten so hard? You haven't rescued anyone yet!”

It looked like everything was going wrong. But God wasn't worried, not even a little. God had a plan. And the rescue was only just beginning.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Moses obeyed God, and at first things got harder instead of easier. Have you ever done the right thing and had it turn out hard at first?
  2. When everything went wrong, Moses took it straight to God and asked Him “why?” Is it okay to tell God when we're upset or confused? What would you want to tell Him?
  3. Pharaoh said, “I don't know this Lord.” If a friend asked you, “Who is God?” — what would you say?
