Genesis 12 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

God speaks to a man named Abram and asks him to do something hard: leave everything he knows and follow God to a place he has never seen.

Today's Story

God spoke to a man named Abram. “Leave your country, your town, and your father's house. Go to a land I will show you.”

That's a big thing to ask! God didn't even tell Abram where he was going — just, “I'll show you when you get there.”

But God also gave Abram an enormous promise. “I will bless you. I will make your family into a great nation. And through you, every family on the whole earth will be blessed.”

So Abram trusted God. He packed up everything — his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, his animals, and all he owned — and he set out. He didn't know exactly where he was going. He just followed God, one step at a time.

When he reached the new land, God said, “This is the land I will give to your family.” Right there, Abram built an altar and worshiped God, thanking Him for His promise.

Abram couldn't see the whole plan. But he could see God. And that was enough to take the very first step.

Talk About It

  1. God asked Abram to go without telling him the whole plan. Would that be hard or exciting for you? Why?
  2. God promised that Abram would be a blessing to others. What's one way YOU could be a blessing to someone this week?
  3. Abram trusted God enough to take the first step. What's a “first step” of trusting God that you could take?
