Genesis 13 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Abram and his nephew Lot both have so many animals that there isn't room for everyone. Abram shows what it looks like to choose peace over getting your own way.

Today's Story

Abram and his nephew Lot traveled together, and God had blessed them both with huge herds of animals — so many that the land couldn't feed them all at once. Their workers started arguing over the best grass and water.

Abram didn't want fighting in the family. So he had a generous idea. “Let's not quarrel,” he said to Lot. “There's plenty of land. You choose first. If you go left, I'll go right. If you go right, I'll go left.”

Now, Abram was older — he could have picked first and taken the best for himself. But he let Lot choose. Lot looked out and picked the greenest, best-looking land near the river, and off he went.

Abram took whatever was left. But here's the surprise: after Lot left, God spoke to Abram. “Look in every direction — north, south, east, and west. ALL this land I will give to you and your family forever. Your family will be like the dust of the earth, too many to count!”

Abram chose peace and let the other person go first — and God blessed him with far more than he gave up.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Abram let Lot pick first, even the best part. When is it hard to let someone else go first or choose first?
  2. Abram chose peace instead of fighting. What's a way you could choose peace next time you and someone want the same thing?
  3. God blessed Abram with even more after he was generous. Have you ever felt happy after sharing or letting someone else have a turn?
