God asks Abraham to trust Him with the thing he loves most. It's a hard story — but watch how God takes care of everyone in the end.
Today's Story
God had given Abraham and Sarah a son they had waited their whole lives for — a boy named Isaac. Abraham loved Isaac more than anything in the world.
One day God asked Abraham to do something that didn't make sense to him: to give Isaac back to God, as an offering, on a faraway mountain.
It was the hardest thing Abraham had ever heard. But Abraham had learned that God could always be trusted, even when he didn't understand. So early the next morning, he set out with Isaac for the mountain.
As they climbed, Isaac said, “Father, we have the wood and the fire — but where is the lamb for the offering?” And Abraham answered, full of faith, “God Himself will provide the lamb, my son.”
At the top, just as the moment came — God called out, “Abraham! Stop! Don't harm the boy! Now I know that you trust Me with everything.”
Right then, Abraham looked up — and there, caught in a bush nearby, was a ram. God had provided! They gave the ram as the offering instead, and Isaac was safe. Abraham named that place “The Lord Will Provide.”
God had never wanted to take Isaac. He wanted Abraham's trust — and He had a better plan ready the whole time.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Abraham trusted God even when God's ask didn't make sense to him. Is it hard to trust someone when you don't understand why? When have you had to?
- “God will provide,” Abraham said — and God did, right on time. When has God given you or your family exactly what you needed?
- God had the ram ready in the bush the whole time. What does that tell you about how God takes care of us, even before we can see it?
