Genesis 23 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Sarah, who waited a lifetime for her son and laughed with joy when he came, lives a long, full life. When she dies, Abraham finds a special way to honor her.

Today's Story

Sarah lived a long, full life. She had waited so many years for baby Isaac, and she got to watch him grow up. When Sarah died, Abraham was very sad. He cried for the wife he loved so much.

Abraham wanted to honor Sarah with a special resting place. So he went to the people of the land and asked to buy a quiet cave, with a field around it, in a place called Machpelah.

The people liked and respected Abraham. “Take it for free!” they offered. But Abraham wanted to do things right and honestly, so he insisted on paying the full, fair price. He carefully weighed out the silver.

Then Abraham buried Sarah there, with love and care. And that little field became the very first piece of the promised land that truly belonged to Abraham's family — a small beginning of the huge promise God had made.

It's good and right to honor the people we love, even after they're gone. And God's big promises often start with small, quiet steps.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Abraham was very sad and cried when Sarah died. Is it okay to be sad and cry when we lose someone we love? (Yes — even Jesus cried.)
  2. Abraham insisted on paying the fair price, even when he could have taken it for free. Why is it good to be honest and fair, even in sad times?
  3. Abraham honored Sarah with a special resting place. How does your family remember and honor people you love who have died?
