Isaiah was a messenger for God. In this chapter he tells a big, proud city that being proud and unkind will not last forever.
Today's Story
There was a huge, sparkly city called Babylon. It was the biggest, richest city around. And it knew it.
Babylon sat up high like a queen on a fancy chair. It tossed its head and said, “I am the greatest. There is no one like me. Nobody can ever knock me down.”
But Babylon had a problem. It was not kind. When other people were hurting, Babylon did not care. It was rough with them and never said sorry. And it never once thought about God, who made everything.
So God sent Isaiah with a message. “Babylon, you will not sit up high forever,” he said. “Come down. The proud do not stay on top.”
Babylon trusted in all sorts of silly things to keep it safe. It trusted in star-charts and magic tricks and fortune-tellers. But none of those things could really help. They could not even help themselves!
God was saying something true and important: being big and proud and unkind never lasts. Only God lasts. Only God is truly strong. And the people who lean on Him are the ones who are really safe.
A Big Word
Talk About It
- Have you ever been around someone who acted like they were the best and would not share or be kind? How did that feel?
- Babylon trusted in magic tricks and fortune-tellers to keep it safe. What are some things people try to trust in instead of God?
- What is one way you could be humble today - maybe letting someone else go first, or saying sorry?
